Mayans M.C. Co-Creator’s Prison Break Reboot Gets an Exciting Update

Hulu’s preparing to spend some time behind the walls with a planned reboot of the hit series Prison Break. A new take on the show, this one from Elgin James, has just taken a major step forward toward becoming a reality.

Per DeadlineHulu has officially ordered a pilot for the Prison Break reboot. Should the streamer be satisfied with the pilot, a series order will be next. The project comes from James, known for co-creating FX’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff series, Mayans M.C., as well as the BBC/Prime Video series The Outlaws. The potential spinoff with James was first reported to be in early development last year, and finally getting its pilot order follows the original Prison Break recently getting a resurgence in viewership on Netflix after a 2-year hiatus on that platform.

As of now, no plot details have been revealed about James’ Prison Break reboot. It is believed that the series will be set in the same universe as the original show, but will follow an all-new cast of characters with different storylines. It is not expected that original stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will return, though the door seems to be open for characters from the original show to make special appearances in one way or another. In any case, no casting information has been announced at this time.

Elgin James Is Executive Producing the Prison Break Reboot

James will serve as an executive producer on the reboot under his Sierra Drive umbrella. Original show creator Paul Scheuring is also serving as an EP, joined by the returning Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz. It’s reported that Olmstead has been working on the project very closely with James.

“It’s going really well,” Adelstein told Deadline about thhe project’s development in July. “The first script was really, really well done. They’ve given notes and it looks like it’s on its way.”

The first script was really, really well done.

Prison Break was created by Paul Scheuring and originally premiered on Fox in 2005. It primarily followed two brothers, Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) and Michael Scofield (Miller), picking up when the former is given a death sentence for a crime he did not commit, leading to the siblings to plot a grand escape and clear his name. The show also starred Robin Tunney, Peter Stormare, Sarah Wayne Callies, William Fichtner, Paul Adelstein, and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe. The series originally aired for five seasons and concluded with a TV movie in 2009; it returned for a one-season revival in 2017.

The Prison Break reboot hasn’t been ordered to series and there’s no premiere date at this time, but the original show is streaming on both Netflix and Hulu.
