Luke Grimes is far from finished carrying the Dutton legacy forward. The Yellowstone star is set to reprise his role as Kayce Dutton in the upcoming CBS spinoff Y: Marshals, promising a departure from the typical ranch life.
In a recent interview, Grimes disclosed that fans can anticipate more than just a new setting and plotline, hinting at the return of familiar faces from the Yellowstone universe.

Luke Grimes Bids Farewell to ‘Yellowstone’—And Welcomes Kayce Dutton Back
For Luke Grimes, stepping away from Yellowstone after nearly eight intense years proved to be far more challenging than he had anticipated. “It was seven years of immersing myself in the life of a character I’ll never encounter again,” he shared with PEOPLE. “The experience was incredibly tough—it felt like losing a family in a deeply personal way.”
He had genuinely convinced himself that the series finale, which aired in December 2023, marked the end of his journey as Kayce Dutton. “On the final day of shooting, I was certain it was my last moment as Kayce. To me, it was all over,” he recalled. However, just a few months later, an unexpected and exciting new concept emerged—one compelling enough to lure him back into the saddle.
And he’s not returning solo. “You’ll see some familiar faces from the ‘Yellowstone’ world, but there will also be a host of fresh faces joining the mix, so it’ll be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out,” Grimes hinted with a smile. Though he kept the specific identities under wraps, the prospect of cameos or supporting roles from beloved “Yellowstone” characters has longtime fans eagerly speculating and buzzing with excitement.
“If it was just a simple story of ‘he’s happy’—where we’d only watch him bask in contentment? That wouldn’t be very engaging,” he reflected. “But let me tell you, the idea pitched to me is exceptionally strong, incredibly intriguing, and highly original. It captivated me completely, and I’m confident it will draw the audience in just as powerfully.”

What We Know About Y: Marshals So Far
CBS officially confirmed in May 2025 that Y: Marshals is in active development and is slated to premiere as a midseason replacement, bringing fresh excitement to viewers. The show will pick up with Kayce Dutton following the dramatic conclusion of Yellowstone, guiding him into an exhilarating new chapter where he joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit tasked with upholding justice in challenging circumstances.
Now distanced from the familiar confines of Yellowstone Ranch, Kayce will skillfully blend his extensive Navy SEAL training with his deep Montana heritage to deliver frontier justice in the modern West. The series will delve deeply into the physical demands and emotional struggles of law enforcement, set against the backdrop of one of America’s most rugged and unforgiving regions, offering a compelling narrative of resilience and duty.

Y: Marshals will occupy the timeslot originally reserved for The Road, a singing competition crafted by Taylor Sheridan in collaboration with country music icons Blake Shelton and Keith Urban.
The Dutton-verse continues to expand with relentless momentum. Although 1923 concluded with its second season, an untitled spinoff starring Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is currently in development. However, for the time being, all attention is focused on Kayce and the fresh wave of chaos he’s poised to encounter.
Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, has partnered with High West whiskey for its Protect the West initiative. However, he emphasized that his decision to return to the Yellowstone universe was not motivated by his paycheck.
Grimes stated that they “definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable.”
