Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes shares his thoughts on the current title of his upcoming spinoff. Although the original Yellowstone concluded with its fifth season, several of the Western’s pivotal characters are poised to lead their own series in the near future.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are set to reprise their iconic roles, bringing Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler back to life in a highly anticipated spinoff series slated for Paramount+. As for Luke Grimes, the original Yellowstone star will return as Kayce Dutton in the upcoming CBS drama Y: Marshals, which is scheduled to make its exciting debut during the spring 2026 television season.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Luke Grimes responded to the exciting announcement that Y: Marshals is officially moving forward at CBS, sharing a caption that read: “Cowboys don’t say goodbye, they say see you later,” reflecting his optimism for the new chapter ahead.

The post, included below, has already garnered nearly 79 thousand likes at the time of this writing, showcasing the overwhelming enthusiasm from his fanbase. It’s also received enthusiastic support from several of Grimes’ peers in the entertainment industry, with notable figures like Kissing Booth actor Joel Courtney and other well-known colleagues stepping in to offer their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes.

Kayce Begins A New Chapter

Y: Marshals is the current working title for the spinoff, indicating that it remains subject to potential changes as development progresses. However, the core premise will follow Kayce Dutton as he steps away from the familiar confines of the Dutton family ranch and embarks on a challenging new path by joining the elite ranks of the Navy SEALs, marking a significant evolution in his character’s journey.

This notable shift in storyline is mirrored by a corresponding change in the spinoff’s creative team. The series will be helmed by Spencer Hudnut, the seasoned executive producer of SEAL Team, who will take on the role of showrunner and also executive produce alongside the franchise’s visionary creator Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser from 101 Studios, and the accomplished producers John Linson and Art Linson. Check out the official synopsis provided below for more details:

With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.

There is no official word yet on which actors from the Yellowstone cast might make an appearance or whether there will be exciting crossovers with the Beth and Rip series, which appears to be tentatively titled Dutton Ranch.

Nevertheless, it seems evident that, following the tragic death of the central figure John Dutton, the Yellowstone franchise is determined to remain vibrant by diverging the paths of John’s children and sending them on diverse, compelling journeys.

A Lot Is Still TBD

To its credit, CBS has a proven track record of successfully launching new series and ensuring they connect with a wide audience, a strategy that will likely hold true for Y: Marshals as well, given its built-in fanbase from the Yellowstone legacy. The network’s knack for promoting compelling narratives and leveraging established popularity sets a strong foundation, promising an exciting debut that could draw in both loyal followers and new viewers eager for fresh cowboy drama.

However, lingering questions remain about the cast and how, for instance, Kayce’s family—Monica and Tate—will be woven into this new narrative, adding layers of intrigue for fans. Based on the initial details released so far, it doesn’t sound like the spinoff intends to offer a seamless continuation of the previous storyline, instead choosing to explore a previously untapped side of Kayce that had only been hinted at during his Yellowstone tenure, potentially revealing deeper facets of his character.
